of Montreal played the TLA on Friday night(photos)

I had no idea I was even going to this show until a few hours before it started. Our good friends over at Phrequency.com tweeted to the world, “We’re giving away a pair of tickets to of Montreal at The TLA tonight! First person to reply with the hashtag #freestuffphrequency wins!” so I gave it a try and won. It was the second time in a month that I had won tickets to a show via Twitter.

Since I wasn’t there to cover the show, I decided to enjoy myself and the music. I did manage to take a few photos though. Overall it was a fun-filled energetic night with of Montreal who put on their signature, whacky/awesome live show. No other act out there today can top their stage performances. Did you go? Let us know what you thought.

of Montreal, Janelle Monae at the Electric Factory – 09/15/2010

of Montreal and Janelle Monae played highly energetic show at the Electric Factory last Wednesday night. The venue was packed for both performances. However, there may have been more people there for the opener than the headliners and for good reason.

Ms. Monae has established herself in the music world with her stellar debut record, The ArchAndroid, which drew the large crowd to see her open the show. She has a strong voice and a killer stage presence that not too many openers have. There’s much more in-store for Janelle Monae. She’s definitely an artist to keep your eye on.

of Montreal, who just released a new LP False Priest, put on their signature crazy performance. They had a ton of stage props, which ranged from robot looking things to a big elephant monster thing. The band always put on a fun and entertaining show, but it sort of lagged compared to Janelle Monae’s set. Their live show always consists of the same elements, so after a while it gets old. That being said, if it was someone’s first time seeing them live, it was probably one of the best shows of the year. It all depends on the individual person. Photos below.

of Montreal played Fallon last night w/ Solange Knowles

Yesterday afternoon I saw a tweet from Questlove(member of The Roots who are also the house band of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) about how of Montreal and Solange Knowles were the musical guests on the Fallon Show. I had a feeling they would be playing a new song from of Montreal‘s upcoming release False Priest. I missed the show last night, but it turns out they did. The song is called “Sex Karma” and it kind of reminds me of a 70’s disco/R&B tune. Check the video below. Also, take note of the crazy stage performers while they play the song.

Sidenote: You can watch of Montreal play their single “Coquet Coquette” HERE and  ‘Neil Young’ play “Double Rainbow” on Fallon last night HERE.

Another sidenote: of Montreal will play the Electric Factory with Janelle Monae this fall. They have big plans to make for the tour. More details HERE

of Montreal @ the TLA in May – more photos HERE

of Montreal just finished up a mini-tour where they played a few dates around the country including a show at the TLA(link to photos above). With their new record False Priest coming in September, they’ll hit the road again for an extensive tour of the country. Janelle Monáe, who appears on False Priest twice, will open the show. However, according to Kevin Barnes, it won’t feel like she’s the opener. Check out an excerpt of an interview he did with Pitchfork for more details. of Montreal‘s shows are always very theatrical and entertaining but from what he says below, it sounds like they’ll take it to the next level.

The Philly show will be at the Electric Factory on Wednesday, September 15th. Tickets for the show are on sale now and they can be found HERE.

“We’re going to marry the two shows together, in a way. It doesn’t feel like you go see a band, and there’s a pause, and there’s another pause, and then it’s over. We want to control the environment from right when the doors open, and have performance art and video performances and so many different levels of artistic stimulation that would go on throughout the whole night, so there’s never a moment where there’s house music or boring lighting. We want to transform the venues each night, so it becomes this exceptional experience for everyone.”

The band recruited R&B sweethearts Janelle Monrae and Solange Knowles for a few songs. The record was co-produced by Jon Brion(Kanye West, Fiona Apple) alongside front-man Kevin Barnes.

You can check out the first single from the record “Coquet Coquette” below or download it for FREE via the band’s website.

Sidenote: The band recently played the TLA in Philly. Photos from the show can be found HERE.

After a week of traveling with little internet access, this post is finally going up. I’ll keep it short and throw in extra photos. It’s overdue by about five days. Sorry about that.

of Montreal played Philadelphia’s Theatre of Living Arts last Saturday and as expected they put on a highly entertaining show. Lead man, Kevin Barnes, was decked out in his usual, lets just say, interesting outfit, that consisted of short-short cutoff jeans, blue tights and a green spandex top. Barnes truly enjoys what he does for a living to the fullest. He always has a smile on his face. The band were spot on throughout the night which had the crowd going. Everyone was dancing and having a great time. People left the show a sweaty mess completely satisfied. Photos below.
