leave a comment »

Angel Deradoorian, who performs under just her last name– Deradoorian, is best known as one of the three stellar female singers in Dirty Projectors. In her down time from the band, she works on her solo tunes–recording and performing. She released her debut EP, Mind Raft,  in 2009 and more recently performed at the Animal Collective curated ATP Festival in the UK last May.

Luckily for us Philadelphians, she’ll be in town Thursday, September 22nd at Little Bar in South Philly with Hubble and Joe Kusy and the Big Shirts. Tickets will be $10 at the door. Get all the information you need about the show HERE.

leave a comment »

Nat Baldwin, the bassist of the Dirty Projectors, will release his fourth solo full length titled People Changes on May 24th via Western Vinyl. The album has been in the works for a couple of years now and he finally decided to go into the studio last year. It’s comprised of five original tracks and two covers including a cover of Arthur Russel’s “A Little Lost”. You can get a taste of what he’s all about in the videos below.

Along with a new album, Baldwin will be taking his music on tour for a month and half. While out on the road, he’ll make a stop in Philly on Friday, May 6th at the Chapel of the First Unitarian Church. Tickets are on sale and can be found HERE. Listen to Dirty Projectors/Björk collaboration “All We Are”

leave a comment »

Brooklyn’s Dirty Projectors and Iceland’s Björk teamed up to record Mount Wittenberg Orca. The collaboration first came to light in May of 2009 at a Manhatten Bookstore(video below) and was recorded this past April. The final product is 7 songs clocking in around 21 minutes. Read DP‘s David Longstreth letter about the record below. All the proceeds from the record go to the National Geographic Society. You can purchase the album digitally HERE. Stream the closing track “All We Are” below.

Sidenote: Dirty Projectors will play the Trocadero Theatre in September. More info HERE.

“In April 2009, Brandon Stosuy from Stereogum.com asked me if we wanted to play a benefit concert at a bookstore in New York. I said yes. He asked Björk the same thing, and she said yes. Then he asked us if we wanted to collaborate, and we said yes. Björk asked me what we should do, and I said, “I don’t know, I guess I’d really love to write a bunch of new songs for us to sing together?” And she said Yes.

That same month, Amber from Dirty Projectors was walking along a ridge on Mount Wittenberg, north of San Francisco. She was looking out at the ocean and saw a little family of whales, as you sometimes do in April on the Northern California coast. I wrote some songs about it and sent them to Björk, who agreed to sing the part of the mom whale. The songs became Mount Wittenberg Orca. Amber and Angel and Haley sang the part of the kid whales, and I sang the part of Amber. We sang all week long and learned the music just in time to perform it at the bookstore on May 8th.

Then our album Bitte Orca came out and we went on tour forever. We finally got a chance to record Wittenberg last month, almost exactly a year after we first sang it. We went into the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn and rehearsed it for three days, then we recorded it as quickly and as live as possible. We only overdubbed lead vocals and a guitar solo.”

Dirty Projectors covered Bob Dylan

leave a comment »

As we mentioned last week, Dirty Projectors announced a bunch of tour dates including a Philly date at the Trocadero in September. They recently recorded a cover of Bob Dylan‘s “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” for Levi’s, who are offering it as a free download on their website in exchange for your email. Frontman Dave Longstreth replicates Dylan‘s voice pretty solidly and the three lovely ladies of the Dirty Projectors chime in flawlessly with their harmonies.

Levis also have free downloads of Nas, She & Him, and The Swell Season doing selected covers. They have even more covers coming from Passion Pit, John Legend & The Roots, The Shins, The Kills and more.
