The Black Keys, Kurt Vile @ Great Plaza/Penns Landing 07/30/2010

The Black Keys and Kurt Vile played a sold-out show at the Great Plaza on Penns Landing last night. Kurt Vile was a last minute replacement for The Morning Benders, who had to cancel due to illness. According to a tweet from lead singer Chris Chu, he was in the hospital so hopefully it’s nothing serious.

Overall, it was a major disappointment that The Morning Benders could not play. Philly native Kurt Vile held his own but it was not his best performance.  He played a thrown together set with a drum machine, another guitarist and a harp player. A normall Kurt Vile show consists of loud guitars backed by a real drummer. The performance last night, even though it was a good effort, lacked all of that.

When The Black Keys took the stage, the entire venue erupted. Most fans had been waiting inside the venue for nearly two hours and the Akron, Ohio duo did not let them down. They were spot on throughout the night with a full on assault of raw and distorted bluesy guitar riffs and loud, hard hit drums.

The band played songs from their entire discography while highlighting songs off their newest record Brothers. When they did play their newer songs, the duo were joined on-stage by a bassist and keyboardist. It was a nice touch seeing them along side two other musicians, even though they are more than capable without them. All in all, it was an excellent show on a beautiful summer evening. Not too many other summer shows will be about to top The Black Keys. Photos below.

of Montreal played Fallon last night w/ Solange Knowles

leave a comment »

Yesterday afternoon I saw a tweet from Questlove(member of The Roots who are also the house band of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon) about how of Montreal and Solange Knowles were the musical guests on the Fallon Show. I had a feeling they would be playing a new song from of Montreal‘s upcoming release False Priest. I missed the show last night, but it turns out they did. The song is called “Sex Karma” and it kind of reminds me of a 70’s disco/R&B tune. Check the video below. Also, take note of the crazy stage performers while they play the song.

Sidenote: You can watch of Montreal play their single “Coquet Coquette” HERE and  ‘Neil Young’ play “Double Rainbow” on Fallon last night HERE.

Another sidenote: of Montreal will play the Electric Factory with Janelle Monae this fall. They have big plans to make for the tour. More details HERE

La Roux’s show at the Trocadero tonight POSTPONED

leave a comment »

So for those of you who were planning on spending your evening with La Roux at the Trocadero Theatre tonight will have to wait until November to do so. Details below.

“Disappointing news for anyone who was excited to swing by the Troc tonight to catch British electropop duo La Roux –  the show has been postponed until November 9th. Apparently, singer Elly Jackson was recently diagnosed with acute pharyngitis (i.e. a very serious throat infection), forcing the band to reschedule many U.S. dates until later in the year. Jackson even went so far as to post a photo of her doctor’s note on Twitter to prove she’s truly ill and not trying to hose the band’s fans or something (don’t worry, we believed you, Elly!).

In any event, all tickets for tonight’s show will be honored on November 9th; you can also get a refund at the point of purchase, if you wish.”

FREE new MP3 from Pete Yorn “Precious Stone”

DOWNLOAD: Pete Yorn – Precious Stone

“Precious Stone” is a brand new track off Pete Yorn‘s new self-titled record, that drops September 28th via Vagrant Records. I honestly don’t know much about Mr. Yorn, but I dig this track. It’s a very straight forward rock tune with a dirty guitar tone and simple vocals. The song  and the forthcoming album was produced by Pixies frontman Frank Black aka Black Frances. Grab the track above or listen to it below.
